An "impacted tooth" is any tooth that is unable to fully emerge from under the gum.   By continuing to develop below the gum, these teeth often push functioning teeth out of place. A partially emerged tooth may also trap food and plaque in the soft gum tissue around it, leading to decay or infection.

The teeth that most often become impacted are the third molars, also called wisdom teeth.   These teeth are commonly removed to prevent overcrowding on the jaw.

Procedure: If your dental practitioner suspects you have an impaction, he or she will examine the area and take x-rays or scans to evaluate the problem.   These images also allow him to determine the exact location and positioning of the tooth.
